winnipeg jets History

The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Winnipeg Jets are based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. The team plays in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division. The team was formed in 1999 and called the Atlanta Thrashers originally. They were Atlanta's second NHL franchise. In 1972, the Atlanta Flames became the city's first NHL team. In 1980, they moved to Calgary and became the Calgary Flames. The only playoff appearance for the Atlanta Thrashers came in 2006-2007.

In 2011, True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the team and were moved to Winnipeg before the start of the NHL's 2011-2012 season. The team was renamed to the Winnipeg Jets after the original WHA/NHL Winnipeg team, which in 1996 was renamed to the Phoenix Coyotes.

Starting in fall 2011, the Jets will be playing their home games in downtown Winnipeg at MTS Centre. The Jets will continue playing in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, which is the division the team competed in as the Atlanta Thrashers until the NHL realigns prior to the 2012-2013 season.
