toronto maple leafs History
The National Hockey League (NHL) team Toronto Maples Leafs are based out of Toronto, Ontario in Canada. They play in the Eastern Conference's Northeast Division. The franchise is one of the NHL's Original Six members. The team's official name is Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and are a subsidiary owned by the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Since 1999, the team has played their home games in Air Canada Centre. Before then they played in Maple Leaf Gardens for 68 years.
The Leafs and Montreal Canadiens have a well known bitter and long rivalry. The Ottawa Senators are a more recent rival. The franchise has won 13 Stanley Cup Championships. They trail only the Montreal Canadiens' 24 titles. Playing under the name Maple Leafs, Toronto has won a total of 11 Stanley Cups since 1927 when the cup became an NHL competition. They won two cups earlier as the Arenas and St. Patricks. However, the last Cup the Leafs won was in 1967. They have the longest active drought of winning the Stanley Cup . The Leafs are the only team out of the Original Six who hasn't won a Stanley Cup since the NHL expanded in 1967.
In 2010, the Toronto Maple Leaf were valued at $505 million, making them the NHL's most valuable team, with the New York Rangers the second most valuable, followed by the Montreal Canadiens.
