st louis blues History

The National Hockey League (NHL) team the St. Louis Blues is based out of St. Louis, Missouri. The team plays in the Western Conference's Central Division. They are named after “St. Louis Blues,” the famous song by W.C. Handy. The team plays in the downtown area of St. Louis at Scottrade Center, a 19,150 seating capacity stadium. The Blues were established as part of the NHL's original expansion in 1967 when the league went to twelve teams from six. The other 1967 expansion teams included the California Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota North Stars.

During the Blues' first three seasons, they were able to reach the final round of the Stanley Cup Finals. In 1968 and 1969, the Montreal Canadiens swept them and in 1970 the Boston Bruins did. The Blues struggled throughout the 1970s after the Chicago Blackhawks transferred t the Western Division and changes were made to the playoff format. St. Louis made it into the playoffs again in 1980, which was their first of what would be 25 post-season appearances in a row from 1980 through 2004. The Blues also won the Presidents Trophy in 1999-2000 as the top scoring team in the NHL.
