san jose sharks History

The National Hockey League (NHL) team the San Jose Sharks is based out of San Jose, California. The team plays in the Western Conference's Pacific Division. The Sharks home games are played in San Jose at HP Pavilion, which is called the Shark Tank by locals.

The Bay Area was granted an expansion team for the 1991-1992 season by the NHL. During the Sharks first two seasons they were one of the NHL's worst teams. During the 1992-1993 season they set an NHL record with 71 losses. In 1993-1994, in just their third season, the Sharks made a huge turnaround. They finished with a record of 33-35-16 and made the playoffs as the eighth seed for the Western Conference. During the first round they faced the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings, but stunned Detroit by defeating them in seven games. They lost in the second round in 6 games to the Toronto Maples Leafs. The Sharks reached the second round of the playoffs again in 1994-1995.

The 2003-2004 season was the Sharks best ever. They had the league's third best record and scored 104 points. They won their divisions and were the Western Conference's second seed. The Sharks made it into the conference finals for the very first time. However, they were defeated by the Calgary Flames. In 2006-2007, the Sharks posted their best ever record. The Detroit Red Wings defeated them in the semifinals of the playoffs. From 2007-2008 through 2010-2011 the Sharks have won four Pacific Division championships. In 2009-2010, they were swept in the Conference Finals by the Chicago Blackhawks and in 2010-2011 lost in five games in the Conference Finals to the Vancouver Canucks.
