phoenix coyotes History

The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Phoenix Coyotes is based out of Glendale, Arizona, right outside of Phoenix. The team plays in the Western Conference's Pacific Division. The home games of the Coyotes are played at Jobing.com Arena.

In 1972, the Coyotes were originally established as the Winnipeg Jets as members of the World Hockey Association. In 1979, they joined the NHL and in 1996 moved to Phoenix. For seven years their home games were played at US Airways Center (which at the time was called America West Arena) until the opening of Jobing.com Arena in 2003.

After moving to Phoenix in 1996, the Coyotes had six .500 plus seasons six years in a row and made the playoffs each year except for one. However, the Coyotes haven't ever made it past the playoffs first round. From the 2002-2003, through the 2008-2009 seasons the Coyotes failed to make the playoffs. The Coyotes in May 2009 filed for bankruptcy. The NHL currently owns the team and is looking for a local owner. In 2009-2010, the Coyotes finished second in the Pacific Division and lost in seven games to the Detroit Red Wings in the quarterfinals. In 2010-2011, they finished third in their division and were swept in the quarterfinals by the Red Wings.
