ottawa senators History

The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Ottawa Senators are based out of Ottawa, Ontario in Canada. The team plays in the Eastern Conference's Northeast Division. The home games of the Senators are played at Soctiabank Place, a 20,500 seating capacity stadium that opened in 1996.

Bruce Firestone, a real estate developer in Ottawa, established and founded the team. It is the second National Hockey League franchise that has gone by the Ottawa Senators. Originally, the Ottawa Senators were formed in 1883. From 1917 through 1934, they played in the NHL and won 11 Stanley Cups. Firestone waged a public campaign of two years and was awarded an NHL franchise in December 1990. The team started play during the 1992-1993 season in the NHL. Currently, the team is owned by Eugene Melnyk. Forbes Magazine valued the franchise at $197 million in 2009.

Over the last fourteen seasons, the Senators have qualified for the playoffs twelve times, won four division titles, in 2003 won the Presidents Trophy and made an appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007. Since 2005-2006, the Senators have averaged more than 18,000 fans a game.
