The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Nashville Predators is based out of Nashville, Tennessee. The team plays in the Western Conference's Central Division. The home games of the Predators are played at Bridgestone Arena, which used to be called Nashville Arena, Gaylord Entertainment Center and Sommet Center.

In June 1997, the NHL granted franchises to Minnesota, Atlanta, Columbus and Nashville. The Predators began play in the 1998-1999 season and finished second to last in their conference. They chose the saber toothed cat as their logo and Predators as their name.

In 2003-2004, the Predators came in eighth place in their conference and made their first playoff appearance. In the quarterfinals, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Predators in six games. In 2005-2006, the Predators won their most games ever in a season and scored 106 points, which was the first time they had ever had a 100 point season. The Predators lost in five games to the San Jose Sharks during the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

In 2006-2007, the San Jose Sharks once again defeated the Predators in the quarterfinals of the playoffs in five games. In 2007-2008, they lost during the first round of the playoffs for the fourth year in a row to the Detroit Red Wings in six games. In 2009-2010, the Predators again lost in the first round of the playoffs when they were defeated in six games by the Chicago Blackhawks, In 2010-2011, the Predators advanced into the playoffs second round for the very first time. They defeated the Anaheim Ducks during the first round in 6 games, but then lost in the second round in 6 games to the Vancouver Canucks.
