montreal canadiens History
The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Montreal Canadiens are based out of Montreal, Quebec in Canada. The team plays in the Eastern Conference’s Northeast Division. The Canadiens were founded in 1909 and are the only remaining NHL franchise that predates the NHL founding and the longest continuously operated profession ice hockey club as well as one of North America's oldest sports franchises. The team is an Original Six team, which describes the teams that joined the NHL in 1942 and made up the league until the expansion in 1967. The Canadiens won the Stanley Cup in 1992-93, which was the last Cup that a Canadian team has won.
The Montreal Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups, the most championships of any franchise. Twenty two of their championships have been since 1927 when the Cup become competing for solely within the NHL. As of 2010, in terms of percentage, the team has won twenty five percent of the total number of Stanley Cup championships following the era of the Challenge Cup, which makes them one of major sports most successful professional teams.
The Canadiens since 1996 have played at Bell Centre. Until 2003, it was called the Molson Centre. The team formerly played in the Montreal Forum, Mount Royal Arena, Montreal Westmount Arena and Jubilee Rink. Hockey fans everywhere considered the Forum a hockey shrine. The team played there for seven decades, winning all their Stanley Cup championships there except the first two.
