edmonton oilers History

The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Edmonton Oilers is based out of Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. The team plays in the Western Conference's Northwest Division. In 1971, the Oilers were established as one of the World Hockey Association's twelve original franchises. Originally, it was intended that there would be two WHA franchises located in Alberta, with the Calgary Broncos being the other team. However before the first WHA season began the Broncos folded, and the Oilers became known as the Alberta Oilers. The next year they once again were called the Edmonton Oilers and been using that name ever since. In 1979, the Oilers became a member of the NHL along with three other teams when the WHA and NHL merged.

The Oilers since joining the NHL have won five Stanley Cups, along with nine Division Championships, 7 Conference Championships and 2 Presidents' Trophies. The Oilers during the 1980s were a dynasty, led by their star players Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson and Paul Coffey. The Oilers won the Stanley Cup for the 1983-1984, 1984-1985, 1986-1987 and 1989-1990 seasons. Paul Coffey was traded in 1987-1988 and then in August 1988 Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings which helped bring their dynasty to an end.
