The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Calgary Flames are based out of Calgary, Alberta in Canada. The team plays in the Western Conference's Northwest Division. They are the third ice hockey team at the professional level to represent Calgary. They follow the 1921-1927 Calgary Tigers and 1975-1977 Calgary Cowboys. The two Alberta, Canada NHL franchises are the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. The proximity of the two cities had result in an infamous rivalry called Battle of Alberta. The contests between the two teams often are quite heated.

Originally, the team was established in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972 and called the Atlanta Flames. In 1980, the team moved to Calgary. The first three Calgary seasons for the Flames were played at Stampede Corral. In 1983, they moved to Scotiabank Saddledome, their current home. The Flames in 1985-1986 became the first team from Calgary since the Tigers in 1923-1924 to compete in the Stanley Cup finals. The Flames in 1988-1989 won their only championship. They had an unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004.

Calgary has won the Presidents Trophy two times, as the best regular season team in the league and has won five division championships. Jarome Iginla leads the franchise in points, goals games played and has won the Maurice Richard Trophy two times as the leading score in the league. Miikka Kiprusoff and Mike Vernon are tied for all-time wins for a Calgary Flames goaltender. Nine Flames players are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
