The National Hockey League (NHL) team the Boston Bruins are based out of Boston, Massachusetts and play in the Eastern Conference's Northeast Division. The team was formed in 1924 and were the first expansion franchise from the United States. The Bruins are one of the original six teams as well, along with the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadians and Detroit Red Wings. The Bruins have won six Stanley Cup champions, and trail only the eleven by the Detroit Red Wings as most by an American team. Boston plays their home games at TD Garden. Previous to that the team played at Boston Garden from 1928 to 1995.

The Bruins were one of the leading teams during the late 1960s through the 1980s behind star players such as Bobby Orr, Fred Stanfield, Ken Hodge and Phil Esposito. Boston won the Stanley Cup in 1970 in a four game sweep of the St. Louis Blues and in 1972 beat the New York Rangers.

The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup on June 15, 2011 and are the reigning champions. They defeated the Vancouver Canucks during the Stanley Cup Final in seven games. Their last championship came in 1972.
